Solve Errors. - Fix Limited or No Connectivity

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may receive the following error message in the System Tray.
"This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. "

One possible answer involves a bug in Service Pack 2 of Windows XP dealing with a loss of network connectivity for workstations that use to connect to servers that are connected to NAT-based networks. However, this bug seems to appear in situations that are not associated with VPNs either.

If patching Windows XP for this bug does not fix the problem, read through the list below of other causes and fixes. You may have to reinstall your Firewall , rebuild the configuration in your router, drop your connection speed from 100Mbps to 10Mbps, or assign static IP addresses to your computers in the network to resolve this issue.

Do I know if my system is affected by this bug?

If you have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and are experiencing any of the following symptoms, this bug is affecting your system.

· After installing Windows XP SP2, your network connection reports a problem with "Limited or No Connectivity"

· You have trouble connecting to the Internet or your local area network after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2.

· Your network connection gets stuck "Acquiring IP Address"

Steps to Take to Fix This Problem?

If you are receiving this error, you should run the Microsoft pach kb884020 for it. Follow the instructions below to do this.

1) Download the patch from Microsoft's site
2) Run the update to install it
3) Run this short Registry fix to complete the update. Type the following lines in Notepad and save the file as "FixReg.reg" on your desktop, then double click on it to install into your registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec]
"AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule"=dword:00000002

4) Reboot your computer

If you experience the error message again, reboot your computer first. In most cases this will solve many connectivity issues that are not associated with this SP2 bug.

My Connection Works,Just disable the warning message.

If your local area connection is working properly and you simply want to disable the warning message follow these steps.

1.Open Control Panel
2. Open Network Connections and Right Click on the Local Area Connection and click on Properties
3.Uncheck the following option on the General Tab

"Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity"
4.
Click OK and close the Network Connections window.

What to do if Installing this Patch Doesn't Help?
Other Causes For This Problem

If you are still experiencing this error message even after running the patch shown above, you may be experiencing one of several problems shown below:

1.Your Network or DSL router may have bad or missing information. Powercycle your router and/or rebuild the configuration in your router.

2.Double-check your cabling to the computer. Make sure you have the correct type of cabling, straight-through CAT 5 or possibly a crossover cable and try another cable or test the cable to make sure its working properly.

3.Check your network card to make sure its configured correctly and working properly. Many times setting the network card to 10Mbps/Full Duplex will solve this issue. To do this, open Control Panel-->System-->Device Manager. Go to the properties of the Network card, click on the Advanced tab and find the Link Speed andDuplex section. Change it from Auto Detect to 10Mbps/Full Duplex.

4. Check and test yourFirewall. Your firewall, especially if its a software firewall like zolnealaram, Black Ice, Norton Firewall or something else could be blocking the connection. Disable your firewall and test the connection. You may have to resolve the problem by even uninstalling and reinstalling the firewall.

5.Check your IP address assignments and workgroup settings in the computer for accuracy. Statically assign IPs to the computers in your network.

Generic volume cannot be stopped right now error when Removing a pen-drive

When you try to remove a USB pen-drive by using “Safely Remove Hardware > Safely remove USB Mass Storage device” option, windows should stop all the read-write operations on the drive so that the drive can be removed.
But sometimes when you try to eject the USB device by using “Safely remove USB Mass Storage device” option, it shows a message box which says:

The Device Generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later”
In such case its not safe to remove the pen drive as it can get corrupt or get damaged. Many of us face such problem in removing pen-drive. In this post we will see how to fix such issue.

First Let’s see why it happens and the fix

This error comes when you have an application which is running from your pen drive or may be some file or document opened from your pen-drive when you are removing your drive.

In short, some file on your pen drive is in use by some other program on that computer. So close all such files or applications and try removing the drive.
It happens sometimes that you have no application running from your pen drive or any file opened in your knowledge but still when you try to remove the pen-drive it shows this error message shown above. In that case you can use a free application called Unlocker which will help you to remove your pen drive from your windows.

What is Unlocker?

Unlocker is an explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file, folder or pen drive to get rid of error message like the one mentioned above.

How To Remove USB Pen Drive with Unlocker?

1. Download Unlocker from here and install it on your computer.
2. Right click on your USB pen drive in my computer and select Unlocker.

3. A new window will open that will list all the busy handles of files being used on your pen drive. Now click the button which says Unlock All

After clicking Unlock All try to remove your pen drive normally, through “Safely Remove Hardware” dialog.

If still you are not able to remove pen drive then try clicking the Kill Process button in Unlocker.

Note: If none of the above given approach works then turn off the computer and then remove your pen drive out of the USB port.Else your Pen drive will be damaged.

I hope the solution provided above will help you fix the problem, if you know another way to solve this trouble please share it through comments.

PC-Maintenance

Maintaining your computer is the key to keeping it healthy and fully working and of course, fast. Windows 95 has most of the tools for maintaining your PC, but Windows 98 extends the possibilities and makes it even less of a hassle. If you follow the list below and run the programs listed frequently, you will be guaranteed to have a maintained computer at no extra cost. There are, however, other programs in the market with stronger engines, but then again, they're not free (stop smiling...)

Most of these programs can be found under the Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools folder.

1. Disk Defrag: It is advisable to run Defrag under Windows 95 once a month or when you add/remove programs. However, under Windows 98, you can run it every week if you want because it has a new engine, which means that the more you run it, the faster your computer will get. What happens is that your programs are placed on your hard disk in a way so that the ones you use most often are easier for the hard disk to find and run. Make sure that the 'make my programs run faster' is ticked in the 'Settings' window in Defrag.

2. Scandisk: Running a thorough check is good once a month in both Windows 95 and 98. Run this once a month if you feel that your hard disk takes a long time to load programs. A standard check is very fast and checks for basic disk problems concerning files and folders and lost fragments. It takes an average 2 minutes to complete so try running it often.

3. Disk cleanup: This one is good for seeing how much disk space is being used up by unnecessary files that are in the recycle bin, temp folder, or in temporary internet folders. You can then remove them!

4. RegClean: A simple but effective piece of software this is. You can download it for free from Microsoft's web site. It is also available on many magazine cover disks. Reg Clean takes about a minute to check the registry. Then it asks whether you want to clean out redundant or orphan file. This usually helps the computer to get rid of files that have been left behind by uninstalled programs.

5. Windows update: It's a good idea to use Windows Update to make sure your computer has all the latest fixes, patches and updates. You can do so by clicking on its icon in the Start Menu under Windows 98.

6. TweakALL: A very handy program that allows to change settings, which cannot be changed using Windows alone!

Rename Multiple Files at Once

When you download photos from your digital camera, they often have unrecognizable names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other types of files.

1. Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, and then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files that you want to rename.

2. Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are not adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, and then click each item to select it.

3. On the File menu, click Rename.

4. Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type. For example, if you type Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), and so on. To specify the starting number for the series, type the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type. For example, if you type Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), and so on.

Unfreeze Your Windows Computer With AntiFreeze

Unfreeze Your Windows Computer With AntiFreeze

Nothing drives a person more nuts then a frozen computer. This goes for technicians, administrators, typical end users, and everyone else in between. You’ve been working for hours, when suddenly your computer completely locks up, and you are relegated to either rebooting your entire machine or simply killing all programs presently running. It typically happens for no rhyme or reason, but more often then not, is caused by multiple applications overloading your PC to the point where it can’t take it anymore.

While rebooting is usually the most effective solution, it’s typically not the most practical. Fortunately, amongst many of their great products, Resplendence Software has come up with an amazing solution to your ‘frozen’ problems, called AntiFreeze.

What is AntiFree & How it Works?

Antifreeze a self proclaimed ‘Emergency Taskmanager that is capable is suspending all applications presently running, and killing them if necessary. This is how it works.

While AntiFreeze is sitting in your system tray, eating up very little resources, it’s awaiting the hotkey combination of ‘ALT+CTRL+WIN+HOME’. Once this sequence of keys is pressed, the Taskmanager like AntiFreeze is launched and a majority of running applications go into a ’suspended’ mode. Where as it doesn’t kill any particular app, but it places it into an anti virus like quarantine and allows you view any programs that may be the culprit.

As opposed to the Windows Task Manager doesn’t suspend applications, it forces you to kill applications one by one. The suspension feature of AntiFreeze is what makes it unique. It essentially ‘kills’ any item that may be the problem child, without actually killing it at all. In the screenshot below, you can see that you also have the option of resuming programs, which you know aren’t causing the issue.

The only time that such a great application as AntiFreeze won’t come in handy, is when your mouse itself has become unresponsive and your system is quite literally LOCKED UP. This typically points to a hardware issue, whether it be a driver or overheating. Other then that, AntiFreeze is a perfect solution for software based lockups, which can be quite frequent on Windows based machines.

This can be especially handy on a Windows based server, a server where a reboot cannot be accomplished during production hours. AntiFreeze is compatible with 32 and 64 bit XP, Vista and Server 2003 operating systems.

Hide files from your N73 Phone.

So here's the solution.

Firstly, you need to get a piece of software, a file explorer called Y-Browser, you can get it here:

http://www.drjukka.com/YBrowser.html

With this, you can change the attributes of your folders and files (pictures, videos etc.,) so you can hide them from Gallery... I've read about a million articles and none of them explain it clearly, so here's how I did it:

1. Download Y-Browser onto PC

2. Click on the SIS file, and it starts the Nokia Installer, accept the install on your phone...Once its loaded, you'll find in your MENU screen right at the bottom an icon for DrJukka.Com select it, then select the Y-Browser. This application allows you to see your phone internal & external memory as a series of drives, and clicking on the drives you will see all the folders underneath. We need Y-Browser to view hidden folders and hide our own folders.

3. In this next step we want to let the phone create a hidden directory called _PAlbTN, which the phone uses to store thumbnails for your gallery view. This is a hidden folder so you won't see it in the File Explorer supplied with the N73, thats why we need Y-Browser.

a) From your PC, go to your phone and in the Phone Memory (or your external memory), under the folder called DATA, create a new folder, lets call it SECRET for arguments sake... then copy a few photos into it...

b) Switch your phone to Gallery view, and you should see the photos come up as the application finds the new images recently added.

c) Now, fire up Y-Browser again, and use it to go to drive, and the DATA folder, where you should see the SECRET subfolder... click on this and you will see your images together with a sub-folder called _PAlbTN, in there you will see 3 other folders for different sized thumbnails.

d) Go back up to the contents of the SECRET folder, highlight the _PAlbTN folder, then click Options, File, Attributes, then change Hidden to 'No' (scroll down & click on it). This unhides the folder so we can see it via the PC.

e) On your phone, switch to gallery view, you should still see the images.

f) On your pc, go back to the DATA Folder, and in the SECRET sub-folder you should see your images and the now un-hidden folder _PAlbTN. Now all we have to do, is on the pc, drag the images into this folder...

g)As you do this, as the files are moved into this _PAlbTN folder, you will see the images magically (!!!) disappear from the Gallery view.

h) Thats it, you have now created a SECRET folder in which you can hide whatever you want from the Gallery view. You can create as many of these folders as you want to hide whatever you need.

4. OK, how do you get them back into Gallery so we can still use this applications strengths...because I still like the slideshow option.. well this is what I do...I use the File Manager supplied with the Nokia N73 to copy the files I want to view back into the normal IMAGES folder in the DATA directory, and delete them once I've finished. I know its a pain, but it works, and I try and keep my Gallery tidied up under various secret folders which it can't see, and only view things as I need them.

I hope that helps everyone who's struggling with this... and if I'd found a post like this, it might have saved many hours of searching...

Run Linux from an USB Flash Drive

Ever wanted to have a portable operating system? One that can reside inside a small USB flash drive? In the past, it was possible to run a Linux distribution from an USB stick just like you would have run it from a Compact Disc, but this task was quite hard to achieve. Why? Simply because you had to type a lot of geeky commands in a terminal and if, somehow, you forgot one or typed something wrong, the whole process had to be started all over again. Not to mention that it could take about 1-2 hours to make a bootable USB stick. Therefore, this guide is here to teach you some new Linux magic tricks on how to achieve a portable Linux operating system, in no more than 5 minutes! How? With the help of a great and marvelous tool called UNetbootin.

For this tutorial, we've used Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS and BackTrack 3 Linux distributions, both tested with an 1GB Kingstone DataTraveler 2.0 USB flash drive.

Things you need:

- One of the supported Linux distributions of your choice:

· Arch Linux
· BackTrack
· CentOS
· CloneZilla
· Damn Small Linux
· Debian
· Dreamlinux
· Elive
· FaunOS
· Fedora
· FreeBSD
· FreeDOS
· Frugalware
· Gentoo
· Gujin
· Kubuntu
· Linux Mint
· Mandriva
· NetBSD
· NTPasswd
· openSUSE
· Ophcrack
· Parted Magic
· PCLinuxOS
· Puppy Linux
· Slax
· SliTaZ
· Smart Boot Manager
· Super Grub Disk
· Ubuntu
· Xubunu
· Zenwalk

- Minimum 1GB USB flash drive

Step 1 - Download UNetbootin

Ok, so all you have to do is grab the UNetbootin executable from here, and save it on your desktop.

Right click on it and go to Properties...

Close the Preferences window!

Step 2 - Execute UNetbootin and create your portable Linux distribution

First of all, insert the USB stick in an empty port (this is very important, because you will not be able to use the USB stick if you insert it after you've opened the UNetbootin application).

Double click the UNetbootin executable, type your password, and it will open. All you have to do now is to select your favorite Linux distribution and the preferred version/edition, and begin the process. Alternatively, you can download the ISO image of the Linux distribution that you want to make portable, and use it in UNetbootin for an ultra fast process!

In the following example we've used a BackTrack 3 ISO image and installed it on an USB stick with UNetbootin. The whole process took about 5 minutes to complete:
